Sassafras... sounds good doesn't it? You almost want to say it again (well at least I do). In fact Sassafras is a word you won’t be saying much of these days as this Tasmanian timber is quite difficult to get a hold of. In fact the more I find out about this Sassafrass, the more I like it. According to Tasmanian forestry website Sassafras is unique to Tasmania and has quite distinctive qualities; the bark, sap, and associated oils are highly aromatic and smell like cinnamon, while its leaves have a strong sarsaparilla scent.
As you can see by the picture below, the grains of this style of timber are the most varied of all the Tasmanian timbers and Blackheart Sassafrass has distinctive dark brown, black, and even green streaks running through the wood. Blackheart is highly prized for decorative work and bowl turning as no two pieces are ever the same. Sassafras is light and strong and is well known for use in solid tables as well as cabinet-making and turnery.
